KARACHI, Jan 5: A three-member bench of the Supreme Court on Friday granted bail against a surety of Rs50,000 to an accused in a case of fraudulent marriage. The accused, Sahabzada Jalil, was arrested by Gulshan-i-Iqbal police for allegedly preparing a fake Nikahnama and freewill, and for claiming a girl as his wife. His bail applications had earlier been rejected by lower courts.

His counsel, Khwaja Naweed Ahmed, argued that it was a civil case but police were harassing the accused by making it a criminal case. He stated that the accused had been confined for four months, and prayed to the court that his bail application be granted.

Advocate General, Sindh, Qazi Khalid opposed bail plea.

A bench comprising Acting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Mr Justice Rana Bhagwan Das, Mr Justice Syed Saeed Ashhad and Mr Justice Hamid, after hearing the arguments, granted bail to the applicant in a sum of Rs50,000.

BIKE THIEVES: A Sindh High Court bench comprising Mr Justice Zawwar Hussain Jaffery granted bail to two men accused of stealing a motorcycle.

Applicants Mohammad Yousuf alias Mota and Mohammad Aslam alias Zafar were allowed bail in a sum of Rs100,000 on each count.

They were arrested for stealing a motorcycle on May 2, 2006 from Dehli Colony and an FIR of the case was lodged on May 8, 2006 at the Clifton police station.

Advocate Mirza Nazim Baig, the counsel for the appellants, contended that his clients had falsely been implicated in the case due to their political affiliation with a particular party.

He also pointed out that there was no explanation of the delay in the registration of the FIR, which also did not show his clients as the accused.

The accused had been arrested on May 6, 2006 and police showed recovery of the vehicle from their possession.
