NEW DELHI, Dec 24: India's oppositon leader Lal Kishan Advani on Sunday claimed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's UPA government was planning a major surrender on the Kashmir issue, NDTV said.

Mr Advani, who was speaking at the Bharatiya Janata Party's national executive in Lucknow, did not indicate what the surrender might be about but the two countries are currently studying proposals to break new ground in the otherwise intractable dispute.

The senior party leader said the BJP would oppose any such plan as the government had not taken the country into confidence on the status of talks with Pakistan.

"The UPA government is working on a big compromise over the Kashmir issue. The Indian public should take action against such a compromise.

We should oppose the compromise as far as we can," said Advani.

The BJP wanted the government to make its position on Kashmir clear in parliament, he added.

President Gen Pervez Musharraf has accused Mr Advani of being the main suspect in sabotaging the Agra summit in July 2001.

At that time it was thought that the BJP was not taking chances with the Hindu hardliners in the coming elections in Uttar Pradesh. This time too the context appears to be the coming elections in the state.
