PESHAWAR, Dec 23: An inter-tribal jirga left here for North Waziristan on Saturday to take stock of the situation there and adopt measures to ensure full implementation of the September 5 agreement with the government, it is learnt.

The jirga would also convey to their tribal interlocutors in Waziristan's regional headquarters, Miramshah, the government's unhappiness over the lack of implementation of certain clauses of the agreement.

Earlier, NWFP Governor Lt-Gen (retd) Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai told the jirga that he was not happy over the lack of implementation of certain clauses of the agreement, particularly with regard to cross-border infiltration and presence of foreign militants, a source privy to the proceedings of the jirga told Dawn.

The governor drew the attention of the 38-member jirga to reports that foreign militants were openly roaming around in the tribal region and that cross-border infiltration would have to be stopped, it said, adding that the jirga was told to return to the tribal region, engage their interlocutors and ensure that the agreement was implemented in letter and spirit.

The tribesmen should keep their word, it quoted Lt-Gen (retd) Aurakzai as telling the jirga.

The source said that the jirga left for the volatile region and was expected to return before the end of this month.

It would give a briefing to Governor Aurakzai, it said.

"I think it will take about two weeks before we know where we are heading," the source said.

A brief official statement issued here said that the jirga which had brokered the peace agreement held a detailed meeting with Governor Aurakzai and reviewed the situation prevailing in North Waziristan.

It quoted the governor as stating that three months after the agreement, it was time to take stock of the situation and adopt measures to ensure that things moved in the right direction.

"The governor directed the jirga members to visit North Waziristan and carry out a detailed review of the state of affairs and remove bottlenecks to ensure complete success in this regard," the statement read.
