HYDERABAD, Dec 17: The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) demanded on Sunday that the Sindh government should direct the sugar mill owners to purchase sugarcane without any further delay to enable growers to prepare their land for wheat cultivation.

An SCA meeting chaired by Mir Murad Ali Khan Talpur said that the growers would sow wheat and vegetables once the cane was harvested and observed that delay in harvesting of sugarcane had sent vegetables prices skyrocketing.

Mr Talpur expressed fear that the federal government’s project for lining watercourses was more likely to fail due to inefficiency of bureaucracy and appealed to the prime minister to ensure the success of watercourse lining programme.

The meeting said that there was no sign of poverty alleviation especially in rural areas and proposed to the government to advance loans to the poor through the district nazims for setting up milk plants and purchasing livestock.

SSC: The Sindh Seed Corporation (SSC) would prepare a proper plan to produce and market seeds with an aim to provide quality seed to growers and make the organisation a commercially viable concern, said the 11th meeting of SSC management board held on Saturday.

Sindh Agriculture Secretary Mahkumuddin Qadri chaired the board meeting.
