Operation against wheelie

Published December 12, 2006

LAHORE, Dec 11: Following its successful campaign against kite-flyers, the city police have been assigned the task to curb an equally fatal ‘sport’, recently becoming popular with the thrill-seeking youth — wheelie.

A strict and indiscriminate action was ordered against the one-wheelers by the Capital City Police chief DIG (operation) Aamir Zulfikar Khan, who was chairing a meeting of all divisional SPs held at the Police Lines

He directed the officers not to give any relaxation to the violators and deal with them with an iron hand.

The SP (Security) told the meeting that banners and posters were being displayed in the limits of all police stations to create awareness among the citizens to discourage the practice.

The DIG constituted three teams, respectively led by the SPs of security, headquarters and mobile squads, to monitor the operation against one-wheelers.

He directed the SPs of Cantonment, Model Town and Iqbal Town to ensure effective patrolling on main boulevards of Defence and Gulberg, besides Muslim Town Bridge and Canal Road to prevent the youngsters from participating in the killer sport which has claimed many lives.

Mr Khan said besides officials of police stations, an additional force comprising 1,500 personnel from the Police Lines would also take part in the operation.

He directed the SP (Headquarters) to deploy additional force in all divisions on Saturday night for the purpose.

The DIG appealed to the citizens, especially the parents, to keep a strict watch on their children and not to allow them to get involved in the dangerous `sport’.

CRACKDOWN: The CIA police, during a general hold-up on Sunday night, claimed to have arrested 35 target offenders, eight proclaimed offenders and seized a cache of illegal arms from them.

On the direction of capital city police chief, Additional IG Khawaja Khalid Farooq and CIA SP Masood Aziz constituted special teams which raided hideouts of alleged criminals in Nishtar Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Shahdara, Sattokatla, Hanjerwal, North Cantt, Race Course, Kot Lakhpt and Gulshan-e-Ravi.

The teams arrested 43 offenders involved in various cases and wanted by the police for a long time. The police also seized a rifle, 13 pistols, 53 bullets, a motorcycle and 5 kilogram Charas from them.
