HYDERABAD, Dec 5: Prominent educationist Dr Mohammad Yar Khuhawar has said that only 1,700 out of 7,000 faculty members serving in different universities of the country possessed PhD degrees.
In his lecture on "Higher Education and Importance of Research" organised by Sindh Educationists Forum (SEF) at the press club on Tuesday, he compared Pakistan to other countries of the world and said the country had never paid proper attention to higher education and research.
It was the main reason the country had lagged far behind in development with a dismal three per cent of population opting for higher education, he said.
The participants of the lecture adopted several resolutions demanding equal salaries for the teachers of rural and urban areas, establishment of colleges in all the talukas, award of scholarships for MPhil and PhD and appointment of 2,000 college teachers.
WATER TANK: Sindh Minister for Revenue Dr Irfan Gul Magsi has said that the present government believed in merit and solving the problems of people without any delay.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony for a water tank built by Ehsas Welfare Trust in Ghelo Noonari village on Monday evening, he praised the trust for providing villagers clean drinking water and urged people to support the trust to enable it carry on with its welfare work.
The trust’s chairman Dr Rasool Bux Berham said that his organisation had set up computer centres in different villages, distributed sewing machines among destitute women, provided dowry to orphan girls and also granted loans to the jobless youth to enable them to stand on their own feet.
He said that the water tank constructed at a cost of Rs50,000 would be followed by other welfare programmes.
Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister Ms Nuzhat Pathan, PML leader Mir Sher Mohammad Talpur, Shahzeb Sehwani, Zaibunnisa Mallah, Manzoor Kalhoro and Mohammad Urs Noonari also spoke on the occasion.
