Observers from abroad to monitor polls

ISLAMABAD, Nov 27: The government will invite observers of Commonwealth, United Nations and the European Union to monitor the 2007 general election.

This was stated by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Senator Tariq Azim while talking to a Bangladeshi media delegation, which had called on him here on Monday.

He said Pakistan had a sustainable democratic system and an elected parliament, which would complete its tenure for the first time in the country. He said parliament had entered its fifth year and the general election would be held in 2007. There was a strong opposition in parliament. This showed that democracy was gaining strength in the country, the credit for which went to President Gen Pervez Musharraf, he said.

He said Nawaz Sharif had left the country under an agreement, and Benazir Bhutto was in self-exile and she was free to return but she would have to face the law.
