KARACHI, Nov 27: World Congress of Accountants was held in Istanbul, Turkey early this month at which 5,000 delegates from 120 countries participated, a member of the Pakistan delegation who returned recently said on Monday.

He stated that luminaries of accounting profession were present at the congress to debate on the convergence of synergies of the profession for generating growth and stability worldwide. The congress was inaugurated by Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Speakers drawn from different countries of the world addressed the congress. Ebrahim Sidat, former president of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP), made presentation in the workshop on “Islamic Accounting Standards”. Other speakers in the workshop were from Malaysia, Bahrain and the UK.

Badruddin Fakhri, former president of Institute of Cost and Management of Pakistan (ICMAP), made presentation in the workshop on “Professional Accountants in the Business and Corporate Ethical Behaviour”. Other speakers in the workshop were from the UK, Australia and Holland.

The delegate said that the congress was the biggest congregation of accountants which was organised after every four years by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). The New York based IFAC represents 160 accounting bodies operating throughout the world.

The next congress is scheduled to be held in November 2010 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
