PESHAWAR, Nov 22: Councillors urged the city district government on Wednesday to shift the cattle pens from residential areas of Peshawar city to suburbs because they were causing pollution in the city.

The councillors said at a session of the city district council that some milkmen were keeping buffaloes in residential areas which were causing pollution and causing a stink in the locality.

"The residential area in Notia should be vacated from buffaloes so that a park could be set up for the recreation of children," said Asif Baghi, a councillor. The resolution was passed unanimously in the city district council session held on Wednesday.

The city district councillors complained that the district government was not doing much to stop pollution in the city as roads were littered with garbage and the excrete of these cattle was making the streets dirty and spreading stink.

Ayaz Bhatti, another councillor, pointed out that the district government should take notice of the inefficiency of the sanitation staff.

Jamil Khan, from the union council Pacchagi, said that the poor state of cleanliness in the city was evident from the Chargano Chowk, which is just outside the city district council building, where corpses of animals could be seen rotting in the open.

Ghulam Ali, the district nazim, Peshawar, said that the district government had purchased trolleys for the four towns of the district which would collect the garbage.

The union councillors from Larhma, Pacchagi and Yakatoot also demanded the district government to open schools for girls in their union councils.

Shagufta Malik, a councillor from Sheen Town, presented a resolution demanding the district government to check the trend of setting up boys’ hostels in residential areas. The resolution was unanimously passed by the council.

Fauzia Noor, a councillor from Sharifabad, criticised the district government's reconstruction work in the Qissa Khwani Bazaar where they changed the design of the old monument of martyrs.
