KARACHI, Nov 20: The joint opposition submitted a requisition to the Speakers’ secretariat to summon the provincial assembly session to discuss important issues of public interest soon after the Sindh Assembly session was prorogued by the governor on Monday.

Leader of Opposition Nisar Ahmad Khuhro led a delegation to the Speaker and handed over the requisition signed by more than 35 members to the Speaker’s secretary at about 3.15pm.

The issues which the opposition wanted to deliberate upon were payment of compensation to Sindh for the losses suffered due to short supply of irrigation water for many years; law and order situation, including tribal killing, ban on pillion riding, street crimes; anomalies in preparations of voters’ list and handing over 12,000 acres of twin islands to the UAE firm.

Earlier, Mr Khuhro addressing a press conference in his chamber said he had submitted the resolution about compensation for water losses three days ago so that the resolution could be taken up for discussion on private members day, but the Tuesday’s session was adjourned after question hour due to demise of MPA Ghulam Nabi Shoro.

Mentioning that the tribunal constituted to consider the NWFP case had awarded Rs110 billion to the NWFP government as compensation, he said Sindh’s case was strong enough as water losses turned over 2.2 million acres of agricultural land barren.

He said the law minister without realisation of the losses to Sindh opposed the resolution which was moved in the form of a substantive motion. He regretted the motion was not allowed for discussion.

Mr Khuhro said no adjournment motion was taken up for discussion during the entire session which started on November 3 although all motions they moved had public importance. The motions pertained to compensation to rain victims, sale of twin islands, dengue virus casualties, pillion riding, street crimes and other law and order issues.
