PESHAWAR, Nov 16: The Alliance for the Protection of Human Rights (APHR) on Thursday staged a protest demonstration in front of the NWFP Assembly against the Hasba bill and termed it a tool to violate rights of people of the province.

About 200 representatives of the non-government organisations’ alliance holding black flags gathered from various districts of the province for the demonstration.

The activists also staged a protest demonstration in front of the Supreme Court building here.

They demanded that the apex court should take suo motu notice of the bill.

Peoples' Party Parliamentarians parliamentary leader in the NWFP Assembly Abdul Akbar Khan and Awami National Party parliamentary leader Bashir Ahmad Bilour joined the demonstration in front of the assembly and condemned the MMA government for passing the bill.

They said they had opposed the bill and they would protest throughout the province.

They said that if their parties gained power their first move would be to repeal the bill.

TWO ACQUITED: An additional district and sessions judge here on Thursday acquitted two people charged with narcotics smuggling in a vehicle carrying fake UN registration number.

Judge Gohar Rehman Khan pronounced that the prosecution could not prove the case against the accused, Khyal Bahadur and Sher Bahadur.

The court observed that despite police presence, the vehicle had escaped from the scene and the two accused had been arrested later, which gave them the benefit of doubt. The defence counsel contended that it was a case of mistaken identity.
