Plea against Imax theatre restored

Published November 16, 2006

LAHORE, Nov 15: A Lahore High Court full bench on Wednesday restored a writ petition through which the Karachi-based NGO, Shehri-CBE, challenged the establishment of an Imax theatre and the construction of a modern cinema house and a shopping centre at Doongi ground in Gulberg.

The Lahore Development Authority and the Parks and Horticulture Authority on Wednesday raised objections to the plea for the restoration of a writ petition. However, the Punjab Entertainment Company, a provincial government undertaking, said it had no objection if the writ petition was restored and processed again. The Punjab government had earlier taken the same stance.

The bench adjourned further hearing in the dispute with date in office. PEC legal advisers, Khwaja Saeeduz Zafar and Asjad Saeed submitted that the company had no objection to the restoration of the writ petition, but it would move the court in a miscellaneous application in a few days pleading that the PEC project was aimed at providing entertainment to the people, which was a constitutional obligation of the government. —Correspondent
