Come-from-behind win for Toru Khan

Published November 5, 2006

LAHORE, Nov 4: Toru Khan, a fashionably bred three-year-old colt, outclassed his rivals to win the Y.P.O Cup, a class IV division I handicap race, contested over 1400 metres during the day/night Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Saturday.

Running in the silks of Huzaifa Shoaib, the odds-on favourite colt came from behind to beat the bay colt Achilles by a big margin of nine lengths stamping his bloodline superiority. Challenger and Miss Pole came staggering behind to complete the frame. His eight rivals failed to make any impression in the straight but to bow out.

The colt was backed confidently by the connections.

A race earlier, the bay colt Total Surprise virtually made all the running to land a popular win in the Y.P.O Cup for class IV division 11 run over 1400 metres.

The colt from Prince Legend out-of-Little Wonder defeated Baker's Gal by four lengths. Jut Bahadur and the much talked about prodigy Fido Dido completed the frame among nine starters. The winner later survived an objection lodged by the rider of horse placed second Dark-bay filly, Top Cat underlined the improvement this season when winning the Y. P. O Cup for class IV division III under superb handling of jockey Aamir Pervez.

The filly beat by three-fourth of a length another filly Noor ridden in a run away style by Shahid Rehman. Ferrari and Sohna Billoo completed the board.

Charming King won the Mianwali Cup under an excellent ride from Shahid Rehman. He beat Mamula by a head's margin.

Two-year-old colt Kiss Of Luck really proved worth her name when she put up an amazing display to land a classic victory in the Daily Times Cup for half-bred colts and fillies over the sprinting distance of 1000 metres.

This progeny of a French sire Francisco Guardi beat his rivals to win by a distance in a decisive fashion. This was colt's maiden appearance to start the season off winning note.

Trainer Rashid Latif met with a grand success when he swept half the Saturday's card by sending out four winners out of eight races. He saddled Remember You, Volcano, Kiss Of Luck and Charming King.

Jockeys Aamir Pervez and Shahid Rehman shared the riding honours, each bringing home a brace of winners. The former rode home Top Cat and Toru Khan while the later piloted Charming King and Total Surprise.
