LAHORE, Oct 22: Jockeys M. Hanif and Salahuddin II won the riding honours each bringing home a brace of winners during the pre-Eid-ul-Fitr Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Hanif piloted home bay gelding Welcome Mayla in the second and then followed it up with an easy victory on chestnut filly, Helen Of Troy in the third race.

The veteran rider Salahuddin II rode home chestnut colt Mamula and bay mare Wendy Trace in the in the fourth and fifth race, respectively. The mount of Wendy Trace was in fact a bolt from the blue for he replaced apprentice Atif Javed at the starting gates under the orders of the LRC stewards.

The shapely two-year-old filly, Helen Of Troy, opened her debut winning the Nursery Plate, a term race for two-year-old colts and fillies contested over the sprinting distance of 900m.

This daughter of English sire, Bletch Dancer, came with a perfectly timed challenge under jockey M. Hanif to take the advantage in last 200m and beat Richy Dancer by about five lengths. Aaja Bulbul and Beautiful Baby completed the frame among eleven starters.

The best performer of the day was bay colt, Tuman Khan, who came from behind to win the seventh and last race of the day in a most exciting and close finish. He defeated Trace Kim by three-fourth of a length. Tuman Khan was slow to come out of the gate but jockey Shahid Rehman galvanized him into action by setting a hot pace and overtake front runners and beat them all.

The pre-Eid meeting proved disastrous fro the punters as two favourites and a joint favourite obliged them in a card of seven races. Helen Of Troy and Jut Bahadur were the favourites to win. The biggest upset winner of the day was the bay filly, Miss Rough Rough, who beat short odds favourite, Bachelor by a short head at the finishing post.
