India names new envoy to Pakistan

NEW DELHI, Oct 9: Satyabrata Pal, India’s top envoy to South Africa, was appointed on Monday as India’s new high commissioner to Pakistan ahead of the resumption of official-level talks aimed at settling their dispute over Kashmir.

Mr Pal is expected to take up his assignment shortly, India’s External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

He succeeds Shiv Shankar Menon, who has become India’s new foreign secretary, the top bureaucratic job in the ministry.

Mr Pal earlier served as India’s ambassador to Botswana and as deputy permanent representative at the United Nations.—AP
