Canal water supply position explained

Published October 10, 2006

LAHORE, Oct 9: The Chief Engineer, Irrigation, Faisalabad, in response to an Oct 8 report about the canal water shortage in certain areas of Toba Tek Singh district, the command area of the Jhang Branch Canal, says that village 405-JB is located at the tail of Khewra distributary where supply of water is slightly short due to theft. “Generally, the supply at this point is satisfactory.”

In an official statement issued here on Monday, the CE said villages 408-JB and 409-JB are located at Pandori minor where there is no shortage of water and supply at its tail is also quite satisfactory.

Similarly, villages 406-JB and 407-JB are located in the head reach of Khanora minor and are getting adequate supply.

Villages 410-JB 411-JB are at the tail of Khanora minor and since the head reach of this water channel has been silted with the passage of time, supply at the tail is not as required.

In order to ensure required supply at tail of Khanora minor, desilting with machines has been started and that the water supply at the tail will improve within a couple of days.

According to the statement, a stern action is being taken against water thieves.

It further said that the century-old Lower Chenab Canal System does not allow the required discharge. Therefore, the system is being revamped under the National Drainage Programme to improve its capacity up to 15,528 cusec.
