KARACHI: World Post Day observed

KARACHI, Oct 9: A ceremony to mark World Post Day was held here on Monday at the Postal Recruitment and Training Centre to make afresh the foundation of the Universal Postal Union.

Sindh Postmaster-General Muhammad Ahmed Mian, postal officials and others attended the ceremony. Mr Mian hoisted the flag of the UPU.

Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted the importance of the Post Day, saying that the UPU was founded in 1874 and it was one of the oldest universal organizations. “Since 1874 till date, UPU removed all snags in members countries for ensuring free and safe transmission of postal articles in territorial limits of the member countries,” he said

“The untiring, dedicated and devoted efforts of the UPU have created a conducive environment and has promoted international cooperation, fraternity and universal brotherhood. UPU every year arranges a letter writing competition to strengthen and promote writing skills of students and the common man,” he said.

Mr Ahmed Mian also read out the message of Director-General of UPU Edwan Dayan, who urged postal operators that technology had made this possible to track postal articles from end to end. The UPU director-general said, “This is a very significant achievement for delivery of quality postal service to postal consumer.”

In 2006, the director-general, emphasized upon all stackholders of post to focus their attention on quality and to make all-out efforts to ensure that postal services that they try to contribute fully to social and economic development of their countries. He said that time sensitive delivery must be ensured and performance/quality of service must be quantified to the international standard.

He said safe, secure, flawless time sensitive delivery of postal article was a big challenge, but added modern technology had made the achievement of the goal possible. He said information technology had made it possible to identify the global postal labels used by various postal administrations and also ensures and secures electronic remittance of money locally and globally.

Mr Dayan concluded his message by saying that the delivery of total quality postal service to postal consumer was a must without which, we could not win the trust of postal customer.—PPI
