Baloch jirga forms body

QUETTA, Oct 3: The grand Baloch tribal jirga has formed a six-member supreme council headed by Khan of Kalat Mir Suleman Daud, to implement the decisions taken by an earlier session of the jirga last month.

Members of the council are: Chief of Sarawan Nawab Aslam Raisani, Chief of Jhalawan Sardar Sanaullah Zehri, Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, Nawab Mohammad Khan Shahwani and Sardar Akhtar Jan Mengal.

Briefing newsmen after the concluding session of the two-day jirga, Mr Raisani said the council would approach the International Court of Justice to seek implementation of an accord signed by Pakistan and the British governments and the then Khan of Kalat in 1948 regarding status of Kalat State.

He appealed to international community, UN and EU to intervene to stop what he called genocide of Balochs through military operation and efforts to convert them into minority in Balochistan in the name of developing the province.

Speaking on the occasion, the Khan of Kalat said that he would not comment on what happened in the past but thought that raising voice against injustices was his right.

Mr Zehri said that a large number of Baloch youths had been arrested but they were not being produced before the court of law.

Mr Mengal said that Baloch tribes would support a protest movement against the government if launched by the political parties.
