RAWALPINDI, Oct 1: Two personnel of the Gungmandi police were arrested on Sunday after a handcuffed accused escaped from their custody while being shifted back to the police station from the district courts.

Police said five handcuffed accused involved in several robbery cases were taken to the court of law for the hearing of their cases on Saturday.

Three of the accused were sent to the judicial jail by the court, while two, including Mohammad Naeem, were given in a three-day remand.

The two handcuffed accused guarded by SI Malik Yasin and constable Mansha were being driven back to the police station in a taxi when Naeem jumped out of the cab near Rescue-15 at Liaquat Bagh and disappeared.

Meanwhile, three robberies were committed in different parts of Rawalpindi during the last 24 hours, police said.

Tahir Rashid was going home when three robbers intercepted him in Chaklala Scheme III and snatched Rs10,000 from him at gunpoint. The robbers also injured him.

Similarly, four robbers entered a shop in the RA Bazaar area and held its owner Mohammad Israr at gunpoint. The robbers snatched Rs70,000 and gold ornaments whose value is yet to be ascertained.

Councillor Raja Fiazul Haq was going towards Rawat on Saturday night when robbers intercepted his car and robbed him of cash and a cellphone at gunpoint.
