Aziz asks CMs to beef up security

Published September 30, 2006

ISLAMABAD, Sept 29: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Friday expressed concern over the ‘alarming increase in street crimes’ and issued directives to chief ministers and inspectors-general (IGs) to control the crime and tighten security around places of worship, particularly during the holy month of Ramazan.

He was talking to journalists after a meeting that reviewed the law and order situation in the country.

Referring to the street crime, the prime minister said that IGs and home secretaries had been directed to take measures that created ‘an atmosphere of fear’.

Orders were issued to simplify the FIR registration system, he said, adding that IGs had also been asked to train police officers so that their attitude towards people was more cultured.

He said the discussions would also help increase inter-provincial coordination and added that such a meeting would now be held every three month.

He said the meeting stressed the need for motorcycle patrolling for controlling the street crime.—APP
