DHAKA, Sept 28: About 200 persons were injured as angry demonstrators rampaged through streets here and elsewhere in Bangladesh on Thursday in protest against recurring power failures.

The protesters damaged or set fire to over 100 vehicles, including a van of a special police force, and ransacked shops and business establishments in different areas of Dhaka.

Protesters took to the street also in Rajshahi, Munshiganj, Narail, Magura and Barisal.

Although Bangladesh has been suffering from a severe power crisis for the last couple of months, the situation has further deteriorated since the start of Ramazan.

The government on Thursday announced emergency measures, including suspension of power supply to billboards, small factories and power rationing at shopping malls.

The capital’s Mirpur area turned into a virtual battlefield as armoured car patrolled the streets and policemen fired rubber bullets to disperse demonstrators.
