QUETTA, Sept 27: Provincial Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani has appointed former chief executive of the Quetta Electricity Supply Company, Agha Ahmed Gul, a retired brigadier, as vice-chancellor of the Balochistan University.

A handout issued on Wednesday said that the new vice-chancellor would assume the responsibility on Oct 7 and his tenure would be of two years. Vice-Chancellor Ghulam Mohammad Taj’s contract will end in the first week of October.

The government had closed the university on Aug 27 for an indefinite period after students violently reacted to the killing of Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti. The protesters burnt more than a dozen buses and official vehicles of the institution. The university also faced a crisis when the Baloch Students’ Organisation, the Pukhtunkhwa Students’ Organisation and the Pukhtun Students’ Federation opposed the appointment of another retired brigadier as pro vice-chancellor
