KARACHI, Sept 23: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has called for having a comprehensive study by experts about problems facing the coast and environment in the city.

He described the study as most imperative for matters like drain flows during rains, sewage disposal and reclamation in various areas. He was chairing a high-level meeting held at the Governor’s House on Saturday in which marine pollution and the city's sewerage system came under consideration.

The meeting was attended by Sindh Minister for Environment Dr Saghir Ahmed, Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman, Nazim of Karachi Mustafa Kamal, Chairman of the KPT Admiral Ahmed Hayat, Principal Secretary Mohammed Saleem Khan, Additional Chief Secretary for Local Government Mirza Karim Baig and other officials.

Taking notice of objections against reclamation and blockage of various drains, the governor said there should be clear knowledge about this and after the proposed study, all the city government and other departments should formulate their development works and projects keeping all aspects in view.

The governor stressed that on the completion of study, the report be given the final shape after eliciting opinion of experts, NGOs and relevant organizations.

He directed the city government that construction of septic tanks be made compulsory in all the industrial and residential buildings. In this regard he called for necessary amendments in the bylaws of the Karachi Building Control Authority.

He said this should be made compulsory in all new buildings and possible steps be taken with regard to old buildings.—APP
