PESHAWAR, Sept 6: The incidents of kidnapping for ransom and other heinous crimes in the city have been increased several times in recent days, official sources told Dawn on Wednesday.
During Aug 15 to Aug 31, seven persons were kidnapped including Asad Marwat, a college student and son of Abdul Hameed Marwat. While one case of kidnapping was reported in Swat, the sources said.
On Monday, Asad Marwat was abducted somewhere between Hayatabad township and Gulbahar Colony, they added.
Officials in the Hayatabad police station said that as his car was recovered from Gulbahar Colony so they sent a report to Gulbahar police for registration of a case. But when contacted, Gulbahar police officials said they had returned the report to Hayatabad as the crime occurred in their jurisdiction.
Police seemed reluctant to register the case to prove that their area was crime-free, a senior official said.
On Aug 16, Dr Mohammad Ayaz, an orthopaedic surgeon of Ayub Medical Complex in Abbottabad was kidnapped from Hashtnagri area when he was on his way from his clinic in Dabgari Garden to his home in Chamkani.
The kidnappers left his car on Sunehri Masjid Road and took the doctor with them to some unknown place. Sources said that he was still not recovered despite a case had been registered with the East-Cantt police station.
Nisar Khan was kidnapped from his farm on Grand Trunk Road in the Tarnab Farm locality on Aug 15.
The kidnappers demanded Rs1.5 million ransom from his family on telephone.
The Chamkani police despite receiving a complaint did not register a case against the kidnappers, the sources maintained.
Hakimullah, son of Ghulam Habib, a resident of Badhber, was kidnapped by some armed men in front of his house near Spin Jumaat on Aug 26. The Badhber police had registered an FIR against unknown kidnappers, but so far failed to get any clue of Hakimullah’s whereabouts.
Habibullah, a teacher of a girls seminary Madrassa-tul-Banaat, his friends Maulana Waqar Ahmad, a resident of Badhber and Fazal, a resident of Sarband on Bara Road, were kidnapped when they went to Shalobar area of Khyber Agency on Aug 21.
Maulana Waqar picked Habibullah and Fazal from different areas of the city and took them to Shalobar where five armed men kidnapped them. However, Fazal somehow managed to escape after two days.
But now he was in the custody of Khyber Agency political administration on suspicion, the sources said.
Tariq, son of Khuda Dost, a resident of Kabal area in Swat was kidnapped on Aug 20. Later, the criminals made a call from Tariq’s cellular phone to the family and demanded Rs10 million ransom for his freedom.
Despite registration of the case with the Kabal police station, Tariq had not been recovered, according to the sources.
Three persons who were kidnapped in May, July and in the second week of August were still not recovered.
Abdul Karim was kidnapped over land dispute on May 9 and Hayatabad police had registered a case against kidnapping, but did nothing for his release.
Attaullah, son of Master Inayatullah, a resident of Palosi, was picked up by unknown persons when he was coming from Maqdar Zia Mosque after Isha prayers on July 31.
University Town police had registered a case, but failed to recover him even after 37 days.
Teenager Mohammad Ikram, son of Mohammad Islam, a resident of Sethi town, was abducted while going from his house to his uncle’s shop on Aug 12.
