PESHAWAR, Sept 5: NWFP Governor Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai has urged journalists to be realistic and objective and try to avoid sensationalism while filing reports on tribal areas.

Talking to a group of tribal area journalists led by Nasir Mohmand at the Governor’s House on Monday, he said they should ‘‘portray the real picture and positive aspects of the events taking place in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas’’.

He urged them to properly project public welfare activities going on in the areas.

“It is up to us to convert the crisis situation in Fata into opportunities and bring progress and prosperity as well as peace to the tribal areas,” he said.

The tribal journalists, he said, could play an important role

in removing misperceptions about Fata by highlighting the unique and positive aspects of the tribal society.

“The tribal society is egalitarian in nature,” he said.

The governor expressed concern over grouping among tribal journalists and vowed that differences among them would be removed.

He suggested that initially the genuine journalists should be listed to form a base for electing a leadership. He ordered formation of a committee to thrash out the differences.

The tribal journalists would get no collective facility unless they united and came under the umbrella of the Tribal Union of Journalists, the governor said. He said a transparent procedure would be adopted for issuing accreditation cards to tribal journalists.

He assured the delegation that fully equipped press clubs would be constructed in almost all the tribal agencies.—Online
