PESHAWAR, Aug 30: Japan Ambassador to Pakistan Seiji Kojima has said that his government will provide assistance to the NWFP government in social sector. He said that the assistance would be particularly focused on the provision of safe drinking water and education.

Speaking to journalists at the Peshawar Press Club’s guest hour programme on Wednesday, he said Japan had also sent rescue and medical teams to Pakistan after the Oct 8 earthquake.

“We have constructed primary schools, basic health units, bridges and roads in quake-hit areas. I have inaugurated the foundation stone laying ceremony of hostels in those areas,” he added.

He said his country was enjoying cordial relations with China and the United States and all the three countries had a consensus on certain issues on economic, social and political fronts.

He said after World War II, his country was opposed to the armament race in the region.

The Japanese ambassador said that during his two-day visit to the NWFP, he called on the governor and chief minister and discussed matters of mutual interest with them.

He visited offices of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry and discussed investment opportunities with its members in the province.
