NEW DELHI, Aug 25: Former India Test batsman Vijay Mehra expired on Friday morning here after a cardiac arrest. He was 68 and is survived by his widow, a son and a daughter.

He collapsed while browsing through newspapers at 8.15am, his relatives said. Mehra was the youngest Indian Test cricketer when he made his debut at the age of 17 in 1955 against New Zealand at Mumbai.

He played in eight Test matches and will be remembered for his brave 62 that he scored against England at Kolkata in 1962. He had quite a successful first-class cricket career, scoring 5614 runs with 13 hundreds in 109 matches.

Mehra also served as selector during the 1980s and later became a commentator.—Agencies
