LAHORE, Feb 11: The NAB on Monday arrested and got on remand a deputy director, Umer Haq, another accomplice in railways’ uniform supply fraud.
According to the probe, the gang had caused a total fraud of Rs211.365 million. On Feb 6, the NAB had disclosed in an accountability court more embezzlements, the latest being misappropriation in jackets supply.
Other culprits of the fraud include five railway officials — transport officer Abid Ali Shah, stores head clerk Riaz Ahmad, purchase officer Muhammad Hafeez, accounts officer Muhammad Ameer and senior auditor Khalid Mahmood Tariq — and contractor Shahrukh Mahmood.
INQUIRY: An accountability court on Monday began a post-bargaining inquiry about one Ghulam Nabi who had paid Rs1.76 million to strike a deal with the NAB.
The court asked the accused whether he had paid the amount from the accounts of the Landmark Company, which he headed as a director, his personal account or borrowed from a relative.
The court also wants to know the numbers and bank branches of Landmark accounts and its operators. Thirdly, the court wants to know from him who is in possession of Landmark assets and properties.
The accused had earlier submitted an application in which he had alleged that Chaudhry Abdul Majid, Shahid Mahmood and Sheikh Munir were the real culprits, and that the NAB should not strike a bargain with them.
The accused will respond to the court’s queries in the next hearing.
PHYSICAL REMAND: An accountability court on Monday granted physical remand of a suspended XEN, Abdul Rehman, for 14 days. The accused was arrested on Sunday.
He had allegedly caused a loss of Rs3.1 million by falsely showing purchase of starter switches and tubewell spares while he was posted at Sabzazar Scheme, Multan Road, in 1995-96.—APP
