PESHAWAR, Aug 22: International experts have suggested that the country has the best chance to eliminate polio virus during 2006 as the number of affected people has decreased from 30,000 in 1994 to 13 till July this year because of the Polio Eradication Programme, the United Nations Children’s Fund said on Tuesday.
Unicef said in a statement that the number of cases of polio was estimated at 25,000-30,000 per year before initiation of the National Immunisation Days programme in 1997. With the introduction of the National Immunisation Days the number decreased to 1,147 in 1997.
