KARACHI, Aug 11: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board that henceforth cleaning of storm water drains will not be carried out on an emergency basis, but this will continue throughout the year so that the problem of their over-flowing during rains does not come up.

He directed that drains be completely surveyed and their map prepared, identifying points where these get choked due to encroachments. He said such locations, too, should be pinpointed where machinery cannot get into the drain for cleaning so that a permanent solution thereof is found.

Mustafa Kamal said steps be taken to check emergence of encroachments on drains in future and these should be kept under watch.

He ordered that it should be adopted as a policy that in future no constructions will be allowed over drains, nor encroachments will be allowed to take place. He said in case these things do occur, the water board will held responsible for the same.—APP
