KHAIRPUR, Aug 10: The flood water has refilled and revitalised several dry lakes and ponds in the katcha area along the Indus river.
The lakes refilled in the district are: Miran Wari, Mohilan Wari, Rahujo, Keti Moosa Bughio, Khair Mohammad Channa, Gud, Katpar, Bindi Junejo, Keti Mir Mohammad Ghumro, Unran Wari and other small lakes.
With further increase in the flow, lakes near Kot Mir Mohammad — Shar, Kharos, Mangnejo and Narejo — would get water on Friday night.
The lakes along the Indus river are source of livelihood for thousands of fishermen.
WATER SHORTAGE: Leaders of the Abadgar Ittehad Khairpur on Thursday demanded that water should be released into the Mirwah canal of the Khairpur east feeder and Abul wah of the Khairpur west feeder.
Expressing surprise over mismanagement of the irrigation department, they said that there was flood-like situation in the river but water level in the two canals had been decreased for one week on the pretext of rain.
They said that water level in canals was 3-4 feet.
Farmer Faqir Niaz Hussain said that despite flood, there was no irrigation water in many waterways particularly at tail-end areas.
FLOOD SITUATION: Kingri and Gambat talukas of the district have been declared sensitive in the wake of ‘high flood’ in the Indus river.
At a meeting held here on Thursday, about four points along Indus embankments were declared vulnerable.
The meeting was told by the SE irrigation circle that about 550,000 cusecs water was expected to pass through the katcha area of the district between August 13 and 14
The official said that the flood water might put pressure on the Ulra Jagir Bund.
The DCO told the meeting that army troops had also arrived in the district who would take part in the flood relief movement.
PROTEST: A large number of women belonging to Channa community staged a demonstration in Sobhodero demanding early arrest of the killers of three Channa men murdered about three months ago.
The women who had gathered in Sobhodero from different villages told reporters that police had failed to arrest the accused even after three months.
