ISLAMABAD, Aug 3: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Deputy Chairman Maj-Gen Mohammad Siddique on Thursday said not only governmental institutions but the private sector and civil society organizations must be accountable to the public and to their institutional stakeholders.

“It goes without saying that poor governance breeds corruption and corrupt practices,” he said while speaking at a seminar on ‘Promoting good governance: learning from public sector experience’ organised by the NAB.

The seminar was attended by representatives of academia, intelligentsia, public and private sector experts.

NAB’s deputy chairman said accountability was a key requirement of good governance and development of any country. He was of the view that efficient governance systems should have accountability and prevention mechanism.

“This inbuilt mechanism of accountability will lead to the transparency and the rule of law and will reduce the organisation’s vulnerability to corruption,” he added.

The NAB, he said, in its fight against corruption wanted to form a broad coalition of committed stakeholders.

Speaking on this occasion, Islamabad Traffic Police SSP Sultan Azam Temuri recounted the challenges of changing the traditional attitudes of the policemen and instilling the virtues of public service, integrity and honesty.
