GUJRANWALA, Aug 2: A local court handed down five-year imprisonment and Rs5,000 fine each to a man and a woman for contracting an un-Islamic marriage here on Wednesday.

According to the prosecution, convict Ghulam Mustafa had contracted marriage with Perveen Bibi from whom he had three children. Later, he married off his sister-in-law Mussarat Bibi without giving divorce to his first wife. It was only after a criminal case was registered against the accused when he divorced his second wife.

The court gave observation that, according to an Islamic law, a man could not marry with two sisters simultaneously. Later, both the accused were sent to jail.

POLICE WORK: The justice, criminal and coordination committee has expressed its dissatisfaction with police performance and stressed the need for maintaining the law and order situation and revamping `thana culture.’

Speaking at a meeting of the committee held here on Wednesday, district and sessions judge Mazher Husain Minhas criticised the police for implicating innocent people in criminal cases and humiliating them at police stations.

He said the police had failed to implement court orders and interfered in civil cases following helping land grabbers. As a result of which, he said, the law and order situation was deteriorating and criminal cases were pending with courts for want of police investigation.

He also criticised the jail authorities for not providing better facilities to prisoners in accordance with the jail manual and the Supreme Court’s directives.

DPO Mian Muhammad Asif assured the meeting that the police system was being revamped and inefficient and corrupt officials were being taken to task.

The investigation SP, jail superintendent, district attorney and other senior officers were also present in the meeting.

SHOT DEAD: A youth was allegedly shot dead by his friends over money dispute at Ladheywala Warriach village on Wednesday.

Reports said the youth, Muhammad Kashif, 22, was called out from his house by Tanvir, Rehman Ghani and Arif. They took him to a deserted place and shot him dead after severe torture. The accused fled away after throwing the body in nearby fields.

Police have registered the case.
