N. Areas rivers in high flood

Published August 2, 2006

GILGIT, Aug 1: Almost all local rivers and their tributaries are flowing at high flood level but have not yet touched the mark that was observed last year. The region was lashed by widespread rain which caused widespread devastations in Ghizer and Gilgit, killing eight people.

Reports received here indicated that rivers and streams in the Ghizer district caused heavy erosion in Puniyal and Ishkomen areas. The streams and small tributaries are carrying huge amounts of sediments, destroying irrigation and power generation channels, creating a power crisis and dewatering agricultural lands. An official said that people had been alerted about floods.
