MANSEHRA: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, with financial assistance from the Saudi Fund for Development, is set to execute a Rs19 billion gravity-flow water supply scheme to meet the longstanding demand for potable water in the city and its suburbs here.

“The federal government has signed an agreement with the Saudi Fund for Development to finance a substantial portion of the Rs19 billion gravity-flow water supply scheme. Work on the project is expected to commence shortly,” Project Director Abid Shah told reporters on Saturday.

He said it was one of the biggest potable water supply schemes ever launched by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government with financial assistance from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Health Engineering Department is making rapid progress on the Rs19 billion gravity-flow water supply scheme, which is being undertaken with financial assistance from the Saudi Fund for Development,” Mr Shah said.

He said the mega water supply project aimed to provide a reliable, safe and sustainable supply of drinking water to residents.

“We will lay a 65-kilometre-long pipeline from its water source at Neeli Nadi in the environmentally sensitive Sharan area, situated between Kaghan and Manoor valleys,” Mr Shah said.

He said Deputy Commissioner Yasir Ali Khan was also extending full support to ensure the timely execution of the mega project and the provision of potable water to the residents of the city and its suburbs.

“We will construct a modern water treatment plant, storage reservoirs and an improved distribution network relying on gravity rather than conventional pumping systems. This will reduce energy costs and ensure long-term operational sustainability,” Mr Shah said.

He said the project management unit was actively coordinating with the Saudi Fund for Development, the federal Economic Affairs Division and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Planning and Development Department to expedite the necessary processes and ensure smooth and timely implementation.
