BANNU/LAKKI MARWAT/BAJAUR: Four policemen were martyred in separate attacks in Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Bajaur districts, sources and officials said on Friday.

Sources said unidentified assailants opened fire on a police official at Baramshail Chowk in Bannu district, killing him on the spot.

The deceased, identified as Sadiq Zaman, a resident of Taji Kallay, was serving as a driver with the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in North Waziristan. He was on leave and had come home when he was targeted.

In another incident, a head constable, Ziaullah, who was posted to Bannu police lines, was abducted by unidentified individuals from the Kurram Garhi area near Baran dam. The abducted policeman, who belonged to Wazir subdivision, was later killed.

Police, however, have not issued an official statement about the two incidents.

Separately, a policeman was martyred in a gun attack in Lakki, as police retaliated by killing two terrorists on Friday.

A police official said that constable Mumtaz Khan was performing duty at Shahbazkhel Adda when unknown assailants targeted him. He said that the policeman was seriously injured in the attack and succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to District Headquarters Hospital.

“After the attack, CTD commandos and a police contingent led by district police officer Sajjad Ahmad Sahibzada reached the venue, surrounded the area and spotted the killers,” he claimed.

The official said that the law enforcers neutralised and eliminated two assailants in an exchange of fire.

The body of the martyred policeman was taken to the Police Lines where his funeral prayers were offered.

Also, a policeman was martyred after terrorists attacked a police post in Bajaur district’s Barang tehsil, officials said on Friday.

They said the attack on the police post in the Silai Pati area occurred on Thursday night.

A police official told Dawn that terrorists targeted the police post with multiple arms, prompting the personnel to retaliate. He said the police official embraced martyrdom after putting up a brave resistance. He noted that the attackers fled after an effective response by the personnel.

Funeral prayers of the martyred cop were held at the police lines in Khar on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, Bajaur police on Friday recovered 10 anti-personnel mines planted by unknown miscreants in Lowi Mamund tehsil.

According to a statement, a team of the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) rushed to the area after receiving information about the presence of mines in a field in the Mula Kalay area.

The BDS team cordoned off the field and then safely recovered and defused the Russian-made mines.
