ISLAMABAD: Amid reports of efforts to change the chief minister in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the PTI has reaffirmed its support for non-functional CM Sohail Afridi, ruling out any move within the party to consider an alternative candidate for the office.

In a notification issued by the party’s central secretariat on Thursday, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said Sohail Afridi continued to enjoy the confidence and support of the party’s founding chairman, Imran Khan, and would remain the party’s chief minister in the province.

The notification directed all PTI members, office-bearers, parliamentarians and party functionaries not to convene or participate in meetings, introduce agendas or initiate discussions concerning the nomination or replacement of the chief minister.

It further stated that only Imran Khan had the authority to nominate an alternative candidate or change the decision, adding that his decisions on the matter were final and binding on all party members.

The notification comes amid reports of a possible change in the provincial leadership.

It reiterated the party’s position on Mr Afridi’s continuation in office and sought to prevent any internal deliberations regarding his replacement.

The notification was signed by Barrister Gohar Ali Khan in his capacity as PTI chairman. The party’s Central Information Secretary, Sheikh Waqas Akram, told Dawn that the notification had been issued to prevent any move to change the chief minister. “Imran Khan has the right to change or nominate a new CM,” he said.
