SUKKUR: The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Khairpur on Thursday sentenced a man named Sudhir Ahmed Tagar to death and fined him Rs2.75 million after finding him guilty of the murder of Zahoor Ahmed Tagar.

Model Criminal Trial Court Judge Liaqat Ali Khoso announced the verdict.

The court ordered that the fine be paid to the victim’s heirs. Should the convict fail to pay, the amount will be recovered from his agricultural land and handed to the family.

According to the case, Zahoor Ahmed Tagar was shot dead on Jan 27, 2021 in Mang Tagar village, within the limits of the Wada Machhiyoon police station, allegedly by Sudhir Ahmed Tagar and his accomplices. The victim’s father, Abdullah Tagar, later registered a case against the accused.

The proceedings and verdict were conducted via video link.

The court declared co-accused Mumtaz Ali Tagar, Imtiaz Ali Tagar and Bashir Tagar absconders and directed the Khairpur SSP to ensure their arrest and production before the court.

The verdict came more than five years after the killing. Under Pakistani law, a death sentence passed by a trial court must be referred to the Sindh High Court for confirmation, and the convict has the right to appeal against both the conviction and the sentence.
