BAHAWALPUR: Two patients have tested positive for dengue fever at Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH) during a week.

Dawn has learnt that three patients, including a woman, have been admitted to the hospital with suspected dengue fever. Of them, two have tested positive, while the third is suspected of having contracted the disease.

With the latest cases, the total number of confirmed dengue patients treated at BVH has reached 27 so far this year.

According to hospital sources, the woman has been identified as Mehwish (38), a resident of Ahmedpur East. She is being treated in the hospital’s isolation ward. The identities of the other two patients could not be ascertained as officials withheld their names.

Meanwhile, health department sources said dengue larvae had been detected at more than 300 locations in and around Bahawalpur over the past few days.

The affected sites included the parking area of Bahawalpur railway station and residences in the Railway Colony, where larvae were found in water accumulated in room coolers at several houses.

Following the detection of larvae at a large number of locations, the health department has intensified its anti-dengue spray and fumigation activities in the affected areas.

The department’s entomologist, Sajid Gull, said warning notices had been served on the owners of the premises where larvae were found, directing them to adopt preventive measures. He warned that legal action would be taken against those who failed to comply.

ANTI-RAPE ACT: The Lodhran district police claimed to have registered as many as 14 cases under the anti-rape act during the last 24 hours.

The Lodhran police PRO said the cases were registered mostly against women, who backtracked from their earlier complaints. DPO Lodhran Beenish Fatimah said strict action was in progress against those who filed false complaints with police.

ZOO: The Punjab wildlife department has increased entry and parking fees in Bahawalpur zoo amid the protest from the civil society members and animal lovers.

According to a notification, tickets for adults and children have been enhanced from Rs50 to Rs100 and from Rs30 to Rs50, respectively. In addition, the entry ticket for the students has also been increased from Rs20 to Rs50 each. Besides, parking fees for motorcycles and cars have also been increased from Rs10 to Rs30 and Rs20 to Rs100, respectively.

The local population and civil society members have criticised the wildlife department for increasing the rates and demanded their reduction to make them affordable for commoners and children.
