RAMALLAH: More than 3,000 people have been displaced by an Israeli military operation launched in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron, municipal authorities said on Monday.
The municipality in Hebron, the Palestinian territory’s largest city, said in a statement that 3,189 people including more than 200 infants had been forced from their homes by the ongoing operation. It followed an attack on Friday in which two Palestinian gunmen killed two soldiers before being fatally shot themselves at a checkpoint near the city, just days before Tuesday’s Israeli elections.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged a major operation in response, and Israeli troops soon entered the Hebron neighbourhood of Ein Deir Baha, where the assailants lived, and ordered residents to pack up and leave.
Israel’s military said it had arrested 40 people throughout the occupied West Bank.
