LAHORE: Senior lawyer and Pakistan Bar Council Member Ahsan Bhoon on Monday filed a Rs5 billion defamation suit against retired Capt Muhammad Safdar, husband of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, over questioning the authenticity of his LLB degree.

The Punjab Defamation Tribunal admitted the suit for hearing and issued a notice to Mr Safdar for appearing before it on Nov 11.

In the suit, Mr Bhoon alleged that Mr Safdar made derogatory remarks about his law degree and his eligibility to practise law. He maintained that his law degree was issued by the University of Punjab and had been verified by the relevant institutions.

The plaintiff contended that the defendant’s statements had damaged his legal services and professional standing.

He asked the tribunal to direct Mr Safdar to withdraw the statements, tender an unconditional apology and refrain from making similar remarks in the future.

He sought Rs1bn in general damages, Rs2bn in special damages and Rs2bn in punitive damages.
