GILGIT: An employee of a non-profit organisation, who worked as a driver, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his home on Friday, according to an FIR registered at Danyor Police Station in Gilgit.
The deceased, identified as Pyar Karim, 42, originally hailed from Hunza and resided in Mohammadanabad, Gilgit.
Following allegations made by the deceased in a video, an FIR was registered against five of his colleagues at Danyor Police Station on Saturday under Sections 322 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that the five suspects nominated in the FIR had been arrested and their physical remand obtained from a local court for further investigation.
In a video recorded before his alleged suicide, Pyar accused his colleagues of subjecting him to immense pressure.
The video went viral on social media, prompting demands for an impartial investigation into the allegations. Social media activists condemned workplace harassment and called on authorities to conduct an inquiry.
Social media users criticised the organisation over what they described as a failure to protect its employees.
Meanwhile, Gilgit-Baltistan Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Akbar Nasir Khan took notice of the incident and ordered an investigation.
According to a statement issued by the GB police spokesperson, the IGP directed the DIG Gilgit Range to conduct an impartial, transparent and comprehensive investigation into the case.
