RAWALPINDI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Thursday unveiled the new uniforms for its cabin crew.

According to a PIA press release, the uniforms will be officially in service from Oct 31 onwards, starting with PIA’s newly-acquired Dreamliner’s inaugural flight from London to Islamabad.

The national flag carrier has chosen fashion designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin’s uniform designs as the new face of PIA.

The press release described the uniforms as “engineered for long-haul durability and ergonomic movement with soft, breathable fabrics and structured tailoring”.

The designs were chosen after a competitive showcase in Karachi from collections of Maheen Khan, Deepak and Fahad, Generation, Ismail Farid, Munib Nawaz, Deepak Perwani, Faraz Manan, Amir Adnan and Nomi Ansari — whose uniform designs have been used by PIA for the last 12 years.

The collections were judged by a distinguished panel: Shamoon Sultan, the founder and CEO of Khaadi; Nilofer Shahid, the pioneering Pakistani haute couturier behind House of Meeras; Nabila, the beauty and style maven who has shaped Pakistan’s fashion industry for over four decades; Hina Tayyaba Khalil, vice-chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD); and Naseem Tehrani, a 33-year PIA aviation veteran.

Yasin joins a line of prestigious designers who have dressed PIA’s cabin crew. In 1966, French designer Pierre Cardin designed the airline’s iconic A-line tunic and hood, “defining aviation chic across the globe”.

In the 1970s, the brand’s fashion legacy was enriched by Sir Hardy Amies, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s royal couturier.

“Designing for our national flag carrier is about capturing our collective pride and the genuine warmth of Pakistani hospitality,” Yasin said.

The designer said his designs “respect our heritage, reflect modern fashion and tell our story beautifully in every airport across the globe”.
