LAHORE: In various incidents, the teams of Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) were attacked by assailants during recovery and anti power-theft operations in Kasur and Lahore.

A case was registered against a consumer and five armed men for allegedly assaulting Lesco officials, holding them hostage, snatching a mobile phone and threatening them with dire consequences during an anti-power theft operation in Kasur, according to a spokesperson for the company.

The incident took place in the Court Molvi Abdul Qadir area of Niaznagar sub-division, Kasur circle, where a Lesco team detected suspected electricity theft through a bogus meter.

The team found discrepancies between the meter number and reading recorded during the inspection and the previous record, indicating possible electricity theft.

The spokesperson alleged that when assistant linemen Bilal and Fayyaz began recording the operation, the consumer, identified as Asad Hussain, along with five armed men, assaulted the officials at gunpoint, held them hostage, snatched a mobile phone and threatened them with serious consequences.

A case was registered.

In another incident, police have arrested a man and recovered a pistol from him after an altercation at a Lesco office in Green Town, where two brothers allegedly harassed staff, threatened an official and damaged government property.

The incident occurred after a team detected electricity theft through a direct connection on the premises of a defaulting consumer in the Green Town sub-division of Township division. The team inspected the connection of a consumer identified as Dil Nawaz and found that electricity was being stolen through a direct supply.

The company’s staff recorded the suspected theft on video and severed the connection.

The spokesperson said Dil Nawaz later arrived at the Green Town Lesco office with his brother, Sameer, where the two allegedly abused and misbehaved with the staff. The armed men allegedly attempted to kill Zahid, the officer in-charge of the direct current operations staff, while also threatening uniformed Lesco employees and members of the public present at the office by displaying a firearm. Government property was also damaged during the commotion, the spokesperson said.

The Lesco employees and people present at the scene overpowered the armed suspect and informed police through 15. Police arrived at the site, recovered a pistol from the suspect and arrested him.

Meanwhile, a Lesco team detected electricity theft through an illegal direct connection at a snooker club during an inspection in Lahore’s North Circle. The inspection was carried out by a team led by the Sheranwala Gate sub-divisional officer under the supervision of Superintending Engineer First Circle Muzammil Hussain and Executive Engineer Data Darbar Ahmed Faraz.

The team found that electricity was allegedly being consumed at the snooker club through an unauthorised direct supply.
