GENEVA: Egypt today [Oct 12] accused Britain of trying to take over Libya financially and politically. The Egyptian delegate told the United Nations Libyan Council here ... that Britain’s offer to meet Libyan deficits was dangerous to Libyan independence and ... showed Britain’s desire to take over responsibility for Libyan financial future. The Egyptian delegate criticised ... the [UN] Libyan Commissioner for “having made the British offer possible” and the [US], French and Italian delegations for accepting it. “No one can deny that the United Kingdom has replaced the [UN] as the chief moulder of Libyan’s future, that is, if the [UN] General Assembly accepts what looks now like a political and financial fait accompli,” he said.
[Meanwhile, according to news agencies in London,] It is learned the USA has advised Britain to swallow [its] pride and to seek negotiations again with Premier Mohammad Mossadeq for settlement of the Iranian oil dispute “at the earliest possible date”. The USA is said to be increasingly convinced that Mossadeq was … possibly the only safeguard against extremism in Iran.
