NOTHING BUT RHETORIC

NOTHING BUT RHETORIC: I was following the debates recently in the Sindh Assembly over the proposed administrative units in the province. In an emotionally-charged environment, ruling party representatives tried their best to divert attention from administrative units to the so-called ‘division of Sindh’. Most of those occupying the treasury benches were scions of political dynasties, enjoying wealth, privilege and power by keeping the masses illiterate, poor and hungry. One fails to understand how these people can even imagine fighting for the right of the poor. The common man in rural Sindh has to travel for hours to reach Karachi to get even minor issues resolved. With several administrative units, they will have access to officials closer to home and, therefore, quicker resolution of their problems. What is wrong with that?

AIRLINE UNIFORM: I am a senior citizen witness to the wonderful era in which Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) used to be among the best in business. The uniform PIA air hostesses wore in those days was distinct and had a Pakistani flair. The face of PIA was Momi Gul who lost her life in the infamous Cairo air crash. She looked beautiful and graceful in that practical outfit. None of the uniform designs PIA air hostesses have worn in recent times has impressed me. The management should revive that era’s smart and distinctively Pakistani uniform. Beautiful, smiling air hostesses wearing their green-and-white uniforms, punctuality in flight operations, and serving delightful inflight food used to be the hallmarks of PIA’s services.

TOO GOOD TO HAPPEN: The main opposition party and the government deserved due appreciation for at least initiating a process of political dialogue. One hoped that the dialogue would lead to something better and constructive for not just the two sides, but also for the people of the country at large. But that was unfortunately too good to happen.
