KARACHI: The Theatre K Academy of Dramatic Arts (Theakada) hosted an exclusive screening of a documentary Crones — A Celebration here.
Founded by academic Kulsoom Aftab, Theakada is a leading Pakistani institution nurturing storytellers across theatre and film.
Directed by Joshinder Chaggar, the film serves as a joyous rebellion against ageism, following women aged 60 and above rediscovering their joy through Bollywood dance. It tracks Natalie, the star of the evening, who prepared her show against a long history of family trauma and sexism, deeply moving everyone present.
The event featured the film alongside Chaggar’s recorded videos detailing the creative process. It was followed by an intimate discussion exploring physical performance, female identity and storytelling.
The audience highly praised the welcoming, intellectual environment of Theakada and lauded Ms Aftab for curating the conversation.
The screening attracted prominent figures including Mahnaz Rahman, Ameena Saiyid, Jami, Saima Saleem and Mahera Omar.
“Joshinder Chaggar’s film perfectly captures the emotional intensity of performance,” said Ms Aftab, founder of Theakada.
“It is an essential watch to see how dance, theatre and cinema converge to tell deeply human stories.”
She said: “At Theakada, I am dedicated to building a platform where women theatre and filmmakers are a priority. Through these curated spaces, we bring together a creatively sensible audience that helps build a sustainable niche for independent filmmakers.”
