HYDERABAD: A man shot by a police inspector in the Paretabad area of Hyderabad on Wednesday died in the surgical intensive care unit (ICU) of Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) on Friday morning.

Irshad Qazi had suffered serious bullet injuries to the abdomen, with the bullet damaging his intestine and stomach, after Inspector Mohammad Ashraf Qureshi, who was in uniform, opened fire on him over a petty issue in Paretabad, within the jurisdiction of Pinyari police station.

Two other men, Kamran and Afaq, were also wounded in the shooting.

Irshad was operated on by Prof Ahsan Leghari for repair of the stomach and intestine at LUH City, and was then shifted to the surgical ICU, where he was put on a ventilator. He died in the morning, according to ICU head Dr Kashif Memon.

Hyderabad SSP Shahzeb Chachar said Pinyari police would add Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) to the FIR lodged against Qureshi, an inspector of the Sindh Police Highway Patrol. The case was registered on the complaint of Irshad’s brother, Waqas Qazi.

Qureshi opened fire after an exchange of hot words over a parking issue and other trivial matters. He was arrested and is in police custody on remand.
