LONDON: Mr Winston Churchill, smarting under Labourite charges that he is a “war-monger” said on Saturday night [Oct 6] Britain’s influence in the world was so small that British finger could not pull trigger to start another World War.

Speaking in his own constituency at nearby Woodford after an after-noon tour, Mr Churchill denounced as “falsehoods” the Labour Party campaign statements that Mr Churchill’s Conservatives want “another World War.”

Referring to a recent headline in the Labourite newspaper Daily Mirror “Whose finger do you want on trigger Attlee or Churchills?” Mr Churchill declared: “I am sure we do not want any fingers upon the trigger. Least, of all, do we want fumbling finger.

“I do not believe that third World War is inevitable. I even think that the danger of it is less than it was before the immense rearmament of the USA. But I must tell you that in any case it will not be British finger that will pull the trigger of the third World War. It may be Russian finger or American finger or the UN finger, but it cannot be British finger.” Mr Churchill said: “ … Our influence in the world is not what it was in the bygone days. …”
