RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Post has decided to modernise post offices across the country, implement automation of 2,761 Pakistan Post offices and provide electric bikes to postmen.

The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved the revised PC-I for the automation of 2,761 Pakistan Post offices across the country.

According to a senior official, the project, to be implemented with financial assistance from Exim Bank, will cost over Rs6.29 billion and is scheduled for completion by December 2029.

The project was prepared and presented by Director General Pakistan Post Maqsood Ahmad during his tenure as director general.

Officials consider the project a significant step towards the institution’s digital transformation and long-term sustainability.

Meanwhile, in view of Pakistan Post’s severe financial constraints and shortage of funds for fuel, the department has also begun considering the provision of electric bikes (e-bikes) to postmen in order to reduce the cost of mail delivery.

Initial steps have been launched in Punjab, where, on the instructions of the postmaster general Punjab, a survey is being conducted to ascertain postmen’s willingness to obtain e-bikes.

Under the proposal, employees may be provided e-bikes through third-party financing on easy installments.

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is also being approached for cooperation in the environment-friendly initiative.

The official said the automation project and the proposed e-bike initiative form part of broader efforts to modernise Pakistan Post’s operational structure and make more efficient use of its financial resources.

However, the final implementation of the initiatives will remain subject to the required approvals and subsequent operational steps by the relevant authorities.

Director General Pakistan Post Squadron Leader (retd) Maqsood Ahmad, commenting on the approval of the automation project, said approval of the PC-I by the CDWP was a major milestone for theorganisation.
